I couldn’t help but stare as I watched my roommate ponder over which flavor of ice cream to order. She was talking, but her tight jeans accentuating her belly pooch stole all my attention. She had recently taken to eating a lot, partially due to my subconscious encouragement, and her body wore the evidence.
“So, which one?”
“Uh, what?” I said nervously, averting my eyes.
“Which flavor of ice cream, Reeses or double chocolate brownie?”
“Um, I’m getting Reeses so you get brownie.” I said, mostly cause I knew brownie was more fattening.

Laura rubbed her bulging belly as she sat in the McDonald’s parking lot, sipping the last bit of her chocolate milkshake.
Something about having a belly full to capacity felt like rebellion. Sweet, clothes-tightening rebellion. Laura had just turned sixteen, and with it, was given a new car and freedom she had never formerly experienced. Growing up in a home with a fitness-crazed mother and a passive father, junk food and fast food were consistently off-limits. You would never see anything but whole, healthy food in their fridge. Since she was a child, Laura would gorge herself on junk food anytime she was out of her house for a meal.
